Mattress Buying Guide: Size, Thickness and Foam Explained

Mattress sizes in India are written in inches and confuse almost everyone. Here is the plain version.

Size, decoded

  • 72×30 / 72×36 — single bed. One adult, or a child comfortably.
  • 75×48 — the traditional double. Fine for two people who sleep close, tight for two who spread out.
  • 75×60 — the queen, and the most sold size in India. Two adults with room.
  • 78×72 — the king. Needs a room at least 10×12 ft to leave walking space.

Always measure the bed frame, not the old mattress. A 75×60 mattress on a 72×60 frame overhangs and the corners fail first.

Thickness

4–5 inch is for a guest bed or a child's bed and is felt by most adults within a year. 6 inch is the practical floor for daily adult use. 8–10 inch is where you start getting real support layering. Anything above 10 inch is comfort preference, not necessity.

Foam types

  • Coir — firm, breathable, long life, but heavy and unforgiving. Needs a foam top layer.
  • PU foam — the everyday choice. Density matters more than the name: 32 density or higher holds shape.
  • Memory foam — pressure relief, good for shoulder and hip pain, but sleeps warm.
  • Latex — the most durable and the coolest, and the most expensive.

Warranty vs life

A 5-year warranty does not mean the mattress stays comfortable for five years. Expect roughly 8 years of good life from a 6-inch quality mattress used by two adults, and rotate it head-to-foot every three months.
