Furniture for a New Home: The Order to Buy It In

Most people buy furniture in the order they notice it. That is why so many new homes end up with a beautiful coffee table and nowhere comfortable to sit.

Week 1 — what you sleep and sit on

Bed and mattress first. They are used eight hours a day and are the hardest to change later. Decide the mattress size before the bed frame — 75×60 is the queen standard, and frames are built around it.

Then seating. A three-seater sofa or a sofa plus two chairs covers most living rooms. Measure the doorway and the lift before you order: a 3-seater that cannot enter the flat is a real and common problem.

Week 2–3 — storage

Wardrobe, then anything else. Storage decides how tidy the house stays. A storage bed gives you a second wardrobe without using floor space.

Week 4 onwards — the rest

Dining table, study desk, TV unit, coffee table. By now you know how you actually use the rooms, so you buy the right size instead of the size that looked good in the showroom.

Three checks before any furniture purchase

  • Material honesty. Ask whether it is solid wood, particle board or MDF, and what the warranty covers. Engineered wood is perfectly fine — but it should not be priced like solid wood.
  • Dimensions in writing. Height, width and depth, in cm. A sofa that is 2 cm too deep blocks a walkway.
  • Who assembles it. Flat-packed furniture needs assembly; ask whether it is included and who handles a missing part.
