What Specs Actually Matter When You Buy a Phone
Phone marketing is designed to sell numbers. Most of those numbers barely affect how the phone feels in your hand after a month.
1. Storage, before anything else
128 GB is the sensible minimum in 2026; 8 GB RAM is enough for everything except heavy gaming. A phone with a great camera and 64 GB of storage will frustrate you faster than a mid-range phone with 256 GB.
2. Battery capacity and charging speed together
5000 mAh is the current standard. What matters more is the charger in the box and whether it supports fast charging — a 5000 mAh battery that takes three hours to fill is a daily annoyance.
3. Display quality
Look for AMOLED and a refresh rate of 90 Hz or more. This is the single biggest difference you will notice every time you unlock the phone. Resolution above 1080p on a 6.5-inch screen is barely visible.
4. Software support years
Ask how many OS updates and how many years of security patches the brand promises. Three years of updates is now standard; five years is a genuine reason to pay more.
5. Service network
The best specification is useless if the nearest authorised service centre is 80 km away. In the Sivagangai and Madurai belt, check the brand's service centre before the camera.
What to ignore
Megapixel counts above 50 MP, "AI camera" badges, and 5G as a reason to pay extra — unless you are in a 5G circle and expect to stay there.
