Refrigerator Buying Guide: Single Door, Double Door or Side-by-Side
A refrigerator runs 24 hours a day for a decade, so the running cost matters more than the showroom price.
How many litres?
Plan on 50–60 litres per person, plus 40 litres if you cook at home daily.
- 1–2 people: 180–250 L single door
- 3–4 people: 250–350 L double door
- 5+ people, or you freeze in bulk: 400 L and above
Single door vs double door
Single door is cheaper, uses less power and fits a small kitchen. You defrost manually or pay a little more for a frost-free version.
Double door keeps the freezer separate, usually gives you a dedicated vegetable crisper, and needs no manual defrosting. Worth it for a family of four or more.
Star rating and inverter
A 5-star 250 L refrigerator can use roughly 30% less electricity than a 3-star of the same size. Over eight years that pays back the price difference. An inverter compressor runs at variable speed instead of switching on and off — quieter, gentler on the compressor and cheaper to run.
The stabiliser question
In most Tamil Nadu towns today the voltage is stable enough that a modern inverter refrigerator does not need an external stabiliser, but check the brand manual for your model — some still void the warranty if voltage fluctuates badly. If your area sees regular brownouts or voltage drops, ask for a stabiliser with the fridge.
Check before delivery
- The door should close flush with a single firm push
- Ask the installer to leave it standing upright for a few hours before switching on
- Confirm the warranty period separately for the compressor — usually longer than the product warranty
