Top Load or Front Load Washing Machine: Which Should You Buy?
Both machines wash clothes. They differ in water use, cycle time, fabric care, price and — most of all — in what your home can support.
Front load
- Cleans better on stains and uses roughly 40–50% less water per cycle.
- Gentler on fabric because there is no agitator pulling at the cloth.
- Needs a level floor, a dedicated tap and usually a 16 A point for the larger capacities.
- Costs more upfront and a cycle runs 60–120 minutes.
- Loading is at floor level, so bending is unavoidable.
Top load
- Cheaper to buy, cheaper to repair, faster cycles (35–60 minutes).
- Loading from the top is easier on the back; you can add a forgotten item mid-cycle.
- Uses more water and is harsher on delicate fabric.
- Needs adequate water pressure and a level floor.
Capacity, honestly
Use 7 kg for a family of three, 8 kg for four to five, and 9–10 kg if you wash bedding or curtains at home. Buying one size larger than you need wastes water on every small load.
Two things people forget
The base. A washing machine on an uneven floor walks and eventually damages the drum bearing. Budget for a stand if the floor is not level.
Installation. Brand installation is usually free for the first visit and covers the inlet and drain connection. Confirm who installs it before you pay — we state this on every product page.
